Los Angeles – The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is responding to an outbreak of tuberculosis in downtown Los Angeles, dispatching scientists to the area. As reported by the Los Angeles Times, the outbreak has sparked concern among local and federal officials after approximately 4,650 people have been identified as having possibly been exposed and in need of testing and treatment.
A number of the cases involve homeless individuals living on or near skid row. Individuals who are homeless are stated to be particularly vulnerable to TB due to issues with hygiene, nutrition, and healthcare access.
Jonathan Fielding, director of the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, is quoted in the report as stating of the issue, “This is the largest outbreak in a decade… We are really putting all of our resources into this.”
