Colorado – A Colorado judge has purported that social workers had “failed” a toddler whose mother’s boyfriend beat him to death. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), Judge Chris Melonakis reprimanded the Adams County Department of Human Services during the sentencing of Donald Jean Scarlett for the death of Michael Harris, who was almost 2 when he died.
Melonakis is quoted by the AP as stating in court, “This child was literally failed to death.”
The child and his 3-year-old brother had reportedly been returned to their mother weeks prior to Michael’s death. His mother pleaded guilty to related negligent child abuse charges and is serving a 16-year-sentence.
Assistant District Attorney Jess Redman is quoted as saying of the case in a statement, “Unfortunately our system was unable to protect the child before his death, but we are gratified that the jury who heard the evidence delivered justice to him in this case.”
