California – Thousands of inmates in prisons in California have reportedly refused meals for a second day in protest of serious offenders being held in solitary confinement at Pelican Bay State Prison and other maximum security prisons. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), approximately 30,000 inmates refused meals Monday and Tuesday as part of an announced hunger strike to protest the conditions of offenders held in security housing units.
In addition to the hunger strike, many inmates across the state also refused to attend classes or jobs Tuesday.
The protest is the latest of several reported issues within the California prison system, including a legal battle involving a court ordered early release of thousands of inmates.
