Geneva – The Swiss office of tourism has expressed an apology for an encounter recently described by media mogul Oprah Winfrey involving a shop worker who refused to show her a handbag, purportedly telling her “you will not be able to afford that.” As reported by the Associated Press (AP), a spokesperson for the tourism office spoke to the news source about the incident Friday involving the billionaire, whose earnings for last year was estimated by Forbes as being $77 million.
Winfrey stated to “Entertainment Tonight” that the shop assistant refused to show her a black bag that cost $38,000 during the purported “racist encounter” that occurred while she was in Switzerland last month for the wedding of her longtime friend Tina Turner.
Daniela Baer, a spokeswoman for the Swiss tourism office, is quoted by the AP as stating, “We are very sorry for what happened to her, of course, because we think all of our guests and clients should be treated respectfully, in a professional way.”
The shop owner has also expressed an apology and stated the incident was a misunderstanding.
